Shreyas Iyer Declared Fit for IPL 2024, Asked Not to Stretch Too Forward When Playing Defensive Shot: Report
There have been concerns over Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer's fitness ahead of IPL 2024.

In a positive news for Kolkata Knight Riders, their captain Shreyas Iyer has reportedly been given the fitness certificate ahead of IPL 2024. Iyer has been battling back spasms for some time now and it forced it to sit out from the final two days of the recent Ranji Trophy final between Mumbai and Vidarbha.

However, Iyer has been asked to not stretch his leg too much when playing the forward defensive shot to avoid aggravating the injury.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the India star visited a spine specialist in Mumbai on the advise of the National Cricket Academy.

“He is fit to play, a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR and he can play,” the daily quoted a source as saying.

Iyer has been battling back issue since the 2nd Test of the recent five-match series between India and England.

Following the 2nd Test in Vizag, the middle-order batter reportedly complained of pain in the back after batting for a certain period.

As per reports, the NCA found no fitness concerns despite Iyer’s claim and he was then dropped from the India squad for the remaining three matches.

Asked to play domestic cricket, Iyer then skipped Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final match against Baroda following which missed out on BCCI’s annual contract.

Iyer then played in the semi-final and title clash, scoring a fluent 95 in Mumbai’s second innings before the back pain resurfaced forcing him off the field for the remainder of the match.

Iyer though has joined Kolkata Knight Riders’ pre-season camp ahead of IPL 2024 and took part in a practice match on Sunday. He scored 22 off 19.

As per a report in PTI, the 29-year-old didn’t look comfortable against the spinners and was out stumped when he stepped out to a local spinner.
