Star Indian opening batter Shubman Gill, who missed out on a place in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, is all set to be rested for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in October. After the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which starts on September 19 in Chennai, India will face the Asian side in three T20Is, which are set to take place in Gwalior (October 6), Delhi (October 9), and Hyderabad (October 12).
According to a report in news agency PTI on Sunday (September 15), keeping in mind the busy season ahead, which includes three-match Test series against New Zealand at home and five-match Test series against Australia (away), Gill and a few more important players are all set to be rested for the shortest-format series.
“Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi), and 13 (Hyderabad). Now the first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16.”
“So with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
It has been reported that most of the Test team players are unlikely to play against Najmul Hossain Shanto & Co., which means pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will also be given rest as per workload management requirements.
But it will be interesting to see if Rishabh Pant is also rested for the three-match series. Pant will be a key player for India in the upcoming red-ball matches and is expected to play in all 10 games. His workload is paramount for selectors, and he is needed in longer formats.
If Pant is rested, then there is a possibility that former India U-19 captain Ishan Kishan could get a chance again. Ishan, who played in the first two matches of the ODI World Cup for India last year, made a stunning comeback for India C in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024 match against India B in Anantapur by scoring a century in the first innings.
