Star Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav has been named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year 2023, taking the award home for the second consecutive year. He overcame the challenge of Sikandar Raza, Alpesh Ramjani and Mark Chapman to take the award home.
The right-hander dominated 2023 with an average close to 50 and a strike rate exceeding 150. The backbone of India’s middle order got starts throughout the year, delivering several match-winning contributions.
Suryakumar’s first innings of just seven to start the year against Sri Lanka was a mere speed bump in another prolific year, making scores of 51 (36) and 112* (51) in the next two matches. Consistent scoring in 20s to 40s continued, before an innings of 83 (44) against the West Indies in Providence proved his class. He ended the series against the West Indies with a knock of 61 (45) in Florida.
He flourished despite the burden of captaincy, taking the reins of a young side towards the end of the year. Suryakumar made half-centuries against Australia (80 off 42 balls) and South Africa (56 from 36 balls), before posting an even 100 against the Proteas off just 56 balls in their final T20I of the year in Johannesburg.
Bas de Leede – ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year 2023
Netherlands bowling all-rounder Bas de Leede has bagged the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year 2023 following his notable contributions at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifier and later, in the main event in India. He joins two-time winner Ryan ten Doeschate as Dutch winners of the accolade.
De Leede claimed 16 wickets at the World Cup, beginning with a four-wicket haul against Pakistan. He only went wicketless once in the campaign. He added 139 runs with the bat, making a half-century against Pakistan.
“I’m accepting the award, but I think most of the Dutch boys would have been in contention for it. So it’s a cool way to finish off a great year for The Netherlands. Looking at my performances, it’s probably the best I’ve played for Holland, which I’m very thankful for. I’m happy to have put in some performances to make that happen there,” ICC quoted De Leede as saying.
