'They Need Hardik Pandya': Michael Vaughan Claims India Cannot Win T20 World Cup Without Star Allrounder
Hardik Pandya was part of India's ODI World Cup squad last year but a freak ankle injury midway through a match ended his dream.

In less than two months, the Team India will be embarking on a fresh campaign to bring up an ICC trophy they haven’t been able to win in 10 years now. The prize this time is the 2024 T20 World Cup which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies in June this year.

The Indian players who will potentially make the cut for the marquee event are currently representing various franchises in the ongoing IPL 2024 which will play a significant role in decided the makeup of the squad.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised the Indian team management to make sure they pick allrounder Hardik Pandya for the world cup as it will be difficult for them to win the title without his all-round prowess.

“For India to win the world cup, they need Hardik Pandya, they need him playing well. They need to over the next few weeks get that confidence level right up to the top because India with Hardik flying have got a great chance of lifting the trophies,” Vaughan said on The Ranveer Show on YouTube.

Pandya was part of India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign but during the team’s fourth match of the campaign, against Bangladesh, he ended up hurting his ankle while bowling which ruled him out from the rest of the tournament.

The IPL 2024, where he’s leading five-time champions Mumbai Indians, is his first major competitive event since the freak injury.

Rishabh Pant is another India star who has made his competitive return through IPL 2024 having missed a series of high profile tournaments following injuries he suffered after his car collided with a divider in December 2022.

Vaughan feels Pandya and Pant at their best will be crucial to India’s chances at the T20 World Cup.

“I don’t think they (India) will (win) unless they have a Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant playing well. For India to win T20 World Cup, Rishabh has to play. He has to be playing to a level that it was was before injury. He is kind of getting back to that level and they need Hardik Pandya the allrounder (as well),” Vaughan said.
