Team India continued its unbeaten streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 with a 47-run victory against Afghanistan on Thursday in Barbados. Suryakumar Yadav’s gutsy half-century on a testing surface clubbed with the bowling brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav let India begin their Super 8 campaign on a victorious note.
India opted to bat first and posted a challenging 181/8, riding on Suryakumar’s ballistic fifty and a scintillating cameo by vice-captain Hardik Pandya. In reply, Afghanistan were never in the run chase and folded up for 134 in exactly 20 overs.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Indian captain Rohit Sharma said the experience of playing bilateral series in the Caribbean in the past years came in handy against Afghanistan.
“The last two years, we have come here and played some T20 games. We planned a little well. We adapted well to the conditions that were offered. We knew the class of our bowling lineup would defend this,” Rohit said.
The Indian captain reserved praise for Jasprit Bumrah who was the pick of the Indian bowlers, returning magnificent figures of 3 for 7 in 4 overs. Rohit said the team had faith in Bumrah’s skillset.
“We know what Bumrah can do for us. It is important for us to use him smartly. He is the one who is ready to take the responsibility as well. Wherever he plays, he is always ready to take the responsibility,” he added.
India made a major change in their playing XI which saw Kuldeep Yadav playing his first game in the tournament and Mohammed Siraj missing out. Speaking about altering the combination, Rohit said it was a decision purely based on the conditions in Barbados.
“I got to assess the conditions. Looking at the opposition we are ready to make any changes. We thought three spinners would be good, so we went for that. Going forward if needed, I am open to playing three seamers,” Rohit concluded.
