Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a medical school based in New York, USA has scrapped the annual tuition fee for its students. According to the Agence France-Presse, this institution has disclosed the reason behind it in a statement. The institution revealed that it had received a “transformational gift" worth $1 billion (Rs 82.91 core) from a wealthy benefactor.
With this wealthy grant received from a benefactor, the undiscounted annual tuition fee worth $60,000 (Rs 49,81,521) becomes 0. This charitable donation is one of the largest ever publicly received by an educational institution in the United States. The name of the benefactor, who gave this massive gift to the institution is Ruth L Gottesman, Ed D (doctor of education). He is the chairman of the Einstein Board of Trustees and a Montefiore Health System board member.
The statement by the institution reads, “This historic gift, the largest made to any medical school in the country, will ensure that no student at Einstein will have to pay tuition again." The statement also added that all current fourth-year students will be reimbursed their spring fees for the 2024 semester and from August all future students will receive free tuition.
A video of the students celebrating the occasion has gone viral on social media.
Social media users have appreciated Gottesman’s gesture. One of them commented that this wonderful gesture will make a difference and leave a wonderful legacy for the coming generations. Another wrote that Gottesman’s financial grant is a blessing to the students. One of the users also commented that she wishes more people would repeat this amazing work.
Gottesman, 93, is a former clinical professor of paediatrics at the Einstein Institution. She is also the wife of David Gottesman, a former Wall Street financier. They have been significant donors to the school during David’s lifetime. Albert Einstein College of Medicine and its affiliated hospital the Montefiore Medical Center, are located in the Bronx.
