Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle endured a complicated outing in their recent loss to Sheffield Wednesday. They conceded a 0-4 thumping at Hillsborough in the EFL Championship 2024/25 season.
To add insult to injury, it was also revealed that the team’s kit man had accidentally misspelled two of its players’ jerseys. The photographs of the incorrectly spelled shirts were shared on Instagram. “What a disaster. Plymouth Argyle’s kit man had a major c*** up today, misspelling both Adam Forshaw and Ibrahim Cissoko’s names quite drastically,” read a now-viral post.

Mentioning the incorrect spellings, the football page added, “Printing ‘Foreshaw’ and ‘Issoko’ instead, salt was really rubbed into the wounds [of Plymouth Argyle] as Sheffield Wednesday hammered the Pilgrims 4-0. An all-round day to forget for Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth.”
Fans were astonished at these major mistakes by Plymouth Argyle, expressing their surprise and even disgust at the laughable start.
The Englishman arrived at the EFL Championship side a few months back in May. He oversaw his side’s struggle in Sheffield, yesterday. Speaking about the loss, Rooney told BBC Radio Devon that he was going through a lot of emotions. “I’m disappointed, angry, surprised…I think from everything we’ve seen from the players throughout pre-season today was a surprise to me,” he said.
Speaking further, Wayne Rooney added, “We knew it was important to try and get through the first 20 minutes and then try and get some composure and some calmness to the game, and we didn’t manage to do that.” Having failed at the basics, he said, “I think the basics of the game today was not good enough and for me, that’s not acceptable.”
Plymouth Argyle were trailing 0-1 at half-time following a 35th-minute finish from Jamal Lowe. They next conceded an own goal in the second half off an unfortunate touch from Brendan Galloway. Josh Windass and Michael Smith then added two more goals in the dying stages of the fixture to win the match 4-0. Wayne Rooney and his men are next set to face Cheltenham in the first round of the EFL Cup.
