The Indian men’s hockey team picked up the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 with their 2-1 win over Spain in the third-place playoff game on Thursday.
Harmanpreet Singh netted a brace to rally the Indian side to a come-from-behind win to claim their second straight bronze in as many editions of the Summer Games.
IOC Member and Reliance Foundation chairperson Mrs Nita Ambani heaped praise on the hockey unit for restoring the nation’s rich field hockey history at the quadrennial extravaganza.
“Heartfelt congratulations to our Men’s Hockey Team on winning bronze at the Paris Olympics,” Mrs Ambani said.
“Your determination, tireless efforts, and unyielding spirit have revived Indian Hockey’s rich legacy at the Olympics and paved the way for a glorious future,” she added.
Mrs Ambani asserted, “The entire country joins in celebrating your hard-earned success, and we look forward to seeing you reach even greater heights in the years to come. Jai Hind!”
India got the better of New Zealand to begin the campaign in France, before playing out a draw against Argentina in their second Group stage fixture. The men in blue returned to winning way with a 2-0 triumph over Ireland, before slumping to their only group stage defeat of the tournament against Belgium.
However, India sealed their place in the quarters with a historic win over Australia in their final group outing.
India pulled off a stunning quarterfinal win over Great Britain as they pushed the game to penalties and managed to win 4-2 thanks to some heroics from goalie PR Sreejesh, who has been a stalwart for the Indian side for so long now.
India’s search for a finals berth came to a close with a 2-3 defeat against Germany in the semis, but the men in blue managed to emulate their performance at the Tokyo Olympics with yet another bronze in France.
With the win over the European side on the day, India has pushed their medal tally from the sport to 13 medals, including 8 gold, a silver and 4 bronze medals now.
The win also gave India their fourth medal at the ongoing games in France and the first non-shooting medal of the campaign.
