Dialing the Number
Dial your country’s exit code. Dial the number that’s required to make international calls. In the United States and Canada, the number is 011. In the United Kingdom, the number is 00. In most countries, the number is a combination of ones and zeros, though it differs depending on which country you’re calling from. To find your country code, visit https://countrycode.org/ and type in the country that you live in. In countries like Austria, Bolivia, China, and Egypt, the country exit code is 00. Some countries have a different exit code depending on the phone service you use. For instance, in Brazil, the country exit code for Brasil Telecom is 0014 while for phone company Intelig, the number is 0023.
Enter 45 for the country code of Denmark. 45 must be dialed before dialing the number of the person you want to contact or your call won’t be completed. Dialing 45 will connect you to all phone numbers inside of Denmark. If you were calling Denmark from the United States, the number would look like “01145” so far.
Dial the 8-digit phone number. If you entered the correct exit code and hit 45 for Denmark, you can now dial the rest of the phone number. Keep in mind that long distance charges will be associated with the call depending on what phone plan you have. The entire phone number should look something like, “00 45 55511122.”
Saving Money on International Calling Fees
Keep international fees in mind when calling from a landline. International calling fees could cost anywhere from $1-$5 per minute from a landline. Call your phone company and ask them how much a call to Denmark would cost or find this information on their website. International calling fees could add up to be a lot of money over time, especially if you’re calling a lot. Consider this when making a phone call to Denmark. For instance, if a call to Denmark costs $3 a minute, a 30-minute call would cost a total of $90.
Get an international calling plan to save money on calls. Most phone companies have different international calling plans that will reduce the cost of calling abroad. If you have to call Denmark regularly, it may be worth it to upgrade your current plan to cover international calls. Check your phone carrier’s website or give them a call to get more details on which plans are available to you. International calling plans are available for both landline and cell phones. Some phone carriers will charge an additional monthly fee on top of your current plan so that you can make international calls for cheap or free.
Use a calling card if you don’t have an international calling plan. Find calling cards at department stores, gas stations, or online. Look for a calling card that is able to make calls to Denmark or to parts of Europe and compare the different rates. Then, follow the directions on the back of the card the next time you call Denmark. Typically, you’ll have to dial a special number for the calling card before inputting the phone number to Denmark. Not all calling cards can make a call to Denmark. Make sure to check the details on the card before purchasing it.
Considering Other Means of Communication
Send them an email to avoid international fees. Sending emails back and forth is a great way to avoid international calling fees. The only downsides are that you won’t be able to hear the person’s voice and you won’t be able to communicate quickly since you’ll have to wait for a response. Sending an email is great for things that aren’t urgent, like scheduling a future meeting or asking a question that isn’t time sensitive.
Use a direct messaging app instead of email. Common messaging apps include Gmail, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. Messaging apps remove the wait time that you’d have to go through with email, but still lack the personal connection of being able to hear a person’s voice. Create an account or download the messaging app and connect to them. Then you can start a conversation on the app.
Talk to them through a video app if you want to see and hear them. Use video conferencing software like Skype or Facetime to see the person you’re talking to. This is an even better way to communicate because you’re able to look at the person as you speak. You’ll also avoid potential fees associated with international calls. Alternatives to Skype and Facetime include Facebook video chat, Bria, and Vox.io. One downside to video chatting is that you and the person you’re calling must have the app opened at the same time.
Use a VPN for added online security. A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a program that you can use to encrypt your connection. Usually, a VPN has a monthly fee that can range anywhere from $5-$20 per month. A VPN encrypts communications, which makes communications more secure. VPNs can circumvent blocks on certain video apps in your country. Popular VPNs include NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Hotspot Shield.
