CHENNAI: Assets declared by police officers of the Tamil Nadu cadre have revealed that there are at least 20 crorepatis among 169 officers from the state who had filed their immovable property returns with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The officer who topped the list is A K Viswanathan, IG, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd. He owns property worth Rs 15 crore-five times more than the second richest policeman. All this while his monthly salary, according to data filed by him, is just Rs 37,400. According to Viswanathan's declaration, most of his assets came as gifts from his mother and wife and inheritance from the family.

Three other officers have assets of more than Rs 3 crore-Bhola Nath, DGP/Director of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service; R Sekar, ADGP, CBCID and T Rajendran, ADGP, Intelligence.

Interestingly, all the crorepati cops seem to have preferred investing their money in real estate. While Bhola Nath owns most of his property in the national capital New Delhi and in Uttar Pradesh, he also owns an apartment in R K Mutt road, a prime area here, which he claims is worth only Rs 35 lakh. Sekar owns a house in Anna Nagar worth Rs 1.2 crore, which he says was allotted by the Housing Board.
