BANGALORE: Financial Inclusion is the latest buzz word. Financial institutions have gone all out to ensure ‘inclusive growth’ and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is no different as over 20,000 bank accounts were opened in Tumkur on the basis of the ‘Aadhar’ number, the officials said.Interacting with media persons, UID chairman Nandan Nilekani said that banks did accept UID numbers as basis to open new accounts. He said that the idea of bringing people from rural regions was to ensure that they have the option and access to banking. R S Sharma, director general of UID, said that tribal women in Jharkhand were already availing their daily wages with the help of their Aadhar numbers. He said that there was an option in the form for opening a bank account and the same could be availed by the enrolling party. “We have brought in an ‘introducer’ clause where someone with an Aadhar number can vouch for someone who does not possess any documents for identity proof,” Nilekani said. The authority has aimed to hit the 200 million enrolment mark by the end of January and 600 million before the end of 2014.
