New Delhi: Three more persons, including two in the national capital, succumbed to dengue taking the death toll to 164 on Friday even as 199 fresh cases were reported.
“Three persons died due to dengue in the country till Friday afternoon. Two deaths have been reported from Delhi, while the third is from Punjab,” said P L Joshi, director of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.
Altogether 9,360 people have been infected with the viral disease in the country, he said. Authorities have so far confirmed 155 deaths only.
Last year, 157 people had succumbed to dengue, while 11,985 had been affected.
The national capital registered 64 deaths till Friday, while 39 fresh cases were reported, taking the total number of affected people in Delhi to 2,814.
"Dengue cases have been on a decline in the capital with the onset of winters," Municipal Health Officer N K Yadav said.
Health officials said the dengue deaths could be attributed to the fluctuating day temperatures that were ideal for the virus-carrying mosquitoes to breed.
“The temperature during the day normally hovers between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal range for the breeding of the Aedes aegypti mosquito,” he said.
