Srinagar: In what seems to be a co-ordinated terror attack, five grenade blasts rocked Srinagar on Tuesday.
The fifth blast occurred outside the Tourist Reception Centre at Srinagar. The attack happened a few minutes after Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad passed through the area.
Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Muzzaffar Beigh spoke to CNN-IBN and said that there is a well-spread network of terrorists in the state now.
"I believe terrorists are employing 10-12 year old children who are able to mix with the general crowd without attracting too much attention. These children are the ones who hurl the grenades," he said.
He said that the state cannot be handed over the Army but security has to be tightened, without unduly harassing the civillians.
"We have the CRP which is well-equipped and the local police, but we still need to provide more security to civillians. A workable and effective security strategy needs to be implemented," he said.
He also added that terrorists are now targetting tourists, which is a huge crime against both humanity and the economy of the state, for they are discouraging tourism.
Beigh said that terrorists have been able to strike in many places and just last month a terrorist in an Army uniform entered a political rally.
"Their strategies are getting cleverer and more formidable. They believe in destroying any sense of normalcy in the state."
However, he added that there was no pre-information or alert of any sort. He also said that he would not be able to confirm any arrest, though there are rumours that one person has been arrested in connection with the blasts.
IG Srinagar, S N Sahai said that the fact that these militants militants engage boys from within the state for attacks are tough to detect modules.
"The terrorists find it easy to lure and recruit these young children for they take a few hundred rupees and save the terrorist outfits the huge cost and personnel loss of launching fidayeen attacks," he added.
