PUDUCHERRY: Six history sheeters were arrested on Sunday in connection with the stabbing incident of an autmobile spare parts shop owner Thangamani.The arrested persons were identified as Selvam (40), Muniyandi (25), Muthu (25), Nagaraj(24), Saravanan (32) and Venkatesh (25).On Friday evening, a four-member gang led by ‘Tinker’ Selvam stabbed Thangamani in front of his wife Hemalini after he refused to pay up the ‘mamool’ demanded by them.The condition of Thangamani, who is undergoing treatment at the Government General Hospital, was said to be serious.On the basis of a complaint lodged by Hemalini, a case was registered under sections of 386, 307 IPC r/w 34 of the IPC.On Sunday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Atul Katiyar (IPS) told journalists here that special teams were formed under the supervision of SP (South) A Nandagopal to nab the accused.At 11.50 am, the six persons were arrested from the Velrampet lake bund at Mudaliarpet.Based on their confessional statements, the weapons used by the accused were also recovered, the DIG said. According to Katiyar, the incident created panic in the area. However, top police officials were instructed to allay the fears of the public and the traders, who have been asked to alert the police if they spot some suspicious elements in their area, he said. Police in the nearby stations have also been asked to step up their vigil, Katiyar added.Asked about another incident on Saturday, in which Suresh, a resident of Kailash Nagar, Lawspet, was robbed of `2 lakh, Katiyar assured that the culprits would soon be nabbed. The registration number of the motorcycle used by the accused was traced and was found to be fake, the police official said.Goondas ActQueried about the implementation of the Goondas Act in the region, he said that the police have already sent 15 proposals to the collector in this regard. Assuring that anti-social elements would soon be booked under the Act, Katiyar informed that the police have already identified about 50 such persons-- 20 of them active-- in the UT.
