6-yr-old girl set ablaze by mothers paramour

HYDERABAD: A six-year-old girl, Bhavani, was wrapped in the mattress she was asleep and set on fire near Jeedimetla on Tuesday morning.The accused is the paramour of the girl’s mother and he wanted to take revenge against the woman for avoiding him of late, police said.The brutal incident took place in Mahadevpur area on the outskirts of Jeedimetla.The girl’s parents -- Sujatha and Chennaiah -- came to the city from Mahaboobnagar few years back.Chennaiah died two years ago and Sujatha has been eking a livelihood as a labourer.She developed relationship with another labourer, Vijay, who hails from Alampur in Mahboobnagar and lives in the same locality with his son.His wife, Sobha, died few years back.Vijay is an alcoholic and is used to committing petty offences to meet his alcohol needs.“It was learnt that the relationship between Vijay and Sujatha got strained due to the same reason.But Vijay suspected that she was involved with another person and committed the dastardly act to take revenge on Sujatha,” Cyberabad police commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said.According to a plan, Vijay left his son at his relatives’ place a few days back and returned to the city.On Tuesday morning, he went to Sujatha’s house and by the time she had left for work in KPHB colony.He saw Bhavani sleeping on a mattress.“He bundled the girl in the mattress and took her away to a secluded place near the locality.He then doused the whole mattress in kerosene and set it ablaze,” police said.As smoke emanated from the mattress, workers in a nearby petrol pump rushed there and heard a burning Bhavani shrieking.They tried to rescue the child but Vijay attacked them and tried to resist their move.Locals also reached the place and rushed the girl to a nearby private hospital but the management declined to admit her.With 80 per cent burns, Bhavani was shifted to Gandhi Hospital where she died while undergoing treatment.Jeedimetla police registered a case.
