New Delhi: Orissa top cop B B Mahanti has been granted bail by a Jaipur court on a surety of Rs 2 lakh on Friday.
He had been taken to the Central Jail in Jaipur on Thursday after he surrendered. The Supreme Court had earlier said it would hear Mahanti's bail plea only after he surrendered.
Mahanti was suspended as director general of police (home guard and fire service) by the Orissa government, was wanted by the Rajasthan police for his alleged role in helping his son Bitti — a rape convict — jump parole.
Mahanti was evading police for the past several months for allegedly helping his son Bitti.
Mahanti had gone into hiding and had been evading Rajasthan police for the past several months. Non-bailable warrants issued by the city court also could not be served on him.
On November 15 last year, a local court had declared the senior Orissa cop as an absconder and issued standing warrants against him under which he could be arrested at any time and at any place.
A case was registered by Rajasthan police against the IPS officer early last year for allegedly sheltering and concealing facts relating to his son who jumped parole on December 4, 2006.
Bitti was sentenced to seven years jail term by an Alwar fast track court for raping a German woman in 2006.
