COIMBATORE: P Raguraman is quite unlike the stereotypic politician. A foot soldier of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, he is different not just in appearance, but also in thoughts. While party cadre display their devotion to ‘Amma’ in myriad ways, 36-year old Raguraman has been trying to take Jayalalithaa closer to the future generation. For the past five years, Raguraman, the party’s Coimbatore Students’ Wing secretary, has been distributing free question banks to thousands of government school (Tamil medium) students of classes X and XII. This, according to Raguraman, is no publicity stunt.“We don’t publish random questions picked from previous board examinations. For every subject, eight question banks are prepared by experts including four State and National Best Teacher awardees. Former student toppers also share tips on preparing for the exams,” he revealed. The question bank also contains an advisory on 150 career options. “Being first generation learners, the students have no clue about how an engineering counselling is conducted or about future career avenues. We explain this to them through essays by experts,” Raguraman pointed out. One such essay is authored by the man behind India’s Moon Mission, Myilsamy Annadurai. The AIADMK loyalist also conducts mock board exams to instil confidence in students. Free lunch is provided for the candidates. The Rs 3 lakh expense for this ‘intellectual’ philanthropy is largely borne by him and shared by his former school and college mates. On February 12, the question will be distributed to 5,000 students.
