London: With a worldwide Interpol Red corner notice out against him, the British police are claiming that they know the whereabouts of the WikiLeaks Chief Julian Assange, but can't apprehend him as the Swedish warrants are unenforceable.
Assange's British based lawyer Mark Stephens says the country's authorities know where he is hiding, The Times reported. "The police know how to get hold of him, as does the Swedish prosecutor. Yet no one seems concern to tell us what is going on," he told the paper.
Times said Assange escaped the police dragnet in United Kingdom, just days before his internet whistle-blower came out with the second tranche of sensational American diplomatic cable disclosures.
Assange evaded arrest in Britain because the Swedish authorities made a mistake when filing his arrest warrant.
The paper said the British police knew where the internet whistle-blower was but could not act on the information as the European arrest warrant was incorrectly filled out.
Times said he is believed to be located in southeast England. However, a police source told the paper that the warrant was unenforceable.
Swedish authorities issued the warrants against the WikiLeaks Chief in connection with sex offences on November 19, a day before Interpol placed him on their wanted list.
But in Stockholm, Swedish police said no mistakes were made when filing an international arrest warrant for Julian Assange, refuting a British report that a Swedish blunder could have delayed the WikiLeaks frontman's arrest.
"For us there is no problem, but we are investigating," Swedish National Criminal Police said.
The elusive whistle-blower has not been seen since his website began the release of over 250,000 official US documents on Sunday.
