KOCHI: Children’s Day is round the corner and all the schools in the city are gearing up for it. Assisi Vidyaniketan Public School in Kakkanad is organising a fair titled ‘snehasparsam’.Conceived by the Assisi Socio Span, an organisation of students and teachers of the school is committed to social activity. This endeavour of ‘children for children’ will have children joining hands for some cause with the support of staff and willing sponsors. The aim of the programme is to procure and supply a unique communication device called ‘Avaz’, manufactured in Chennai. Avaz which is relatively new in Kerala has received a national award for the most innovative invention to empower the disabled. The device enhances possibilities for communication and education of children with special needs especially for those suffering from cerebral palsy and autism. The programme also intends to provide educational support for the economically backward children studying in special schools.Another aim of the fair is to provide students with an opportunity to learn leadership and organisational skills while developing a sense of social commitment and responsibility besides acquiring social skills such as empathy, sharing, self-sacrifice and other values. The Assisi Socio Span which was formed last year has implemented several projects for the needy. The members also prepare soap, detergent, phenol, ornaments and display them for sale at the fair. An ongoing programme is ‘fistful of rice’ in which students bring a fistful of rice and the collected rice is distributed to poor homes every month. Onam kits were distributed to poor families in Vallarpadam and Vypeen. Soaps and towels were gifted to the inmates of old-age homes. Money was collected to provide uniforms for tribal children in Wayanad. ‘Snehasparsam’ will be held on November 12. Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs K V Thomas will inaugurate the fair. Archbishop of Verapoly Rev Francis Kallarackal will preside over the function. Mayor Tony Chammany and Benny Behannan MLA will be present.
