New Delhi: As they say in our movies, Mumbai is the city of dreams and every day hundreds of people come to the city to try their luck in showbiz. Of the hundreds who aspire to make it big in the big bad world of Bollywood, only a handful get an opportunity to prove their talent in films. Of those, some shine and make it big and others are lost in the sea of unknown faces who once tried their luck in cinema.
As the year is at its fag end, we look at some actors, writers, singers who tread a risky path and still managed to make people sit up and notice. Some of them were known faces, some were rank newcomers and hence absolutely raw, but all them in their unique way made cinema enjoyable and memorable.
Here are Bollywood's new talents of 2013 who struck a chord with movie goers.
Sushant Singh Rajput (Actor 'Kai Po Che!', 'Shuddh Desi Romance'): He is the poster boy of 2013. The hottest newcomer of this year is actually not a new face. Rajput was already a big star on TV thanks to his stint in daily soap 'Pavitra Rishta' when he quit the show to make his debut in films. Abhishek Kapoor's film 'Kai Po Che' saw him in a drastically different role from the docile Manav that he used to play on TV which left his fans pleasantly surprised. Next up is Dibakar Banerjee's 'Byomkesh Bakshi' where the actor will be playing the title role. Yes, Rajput is clearly going places.
Amit Sadh (Actor, 'Kai Po Che!'): Just for his genuine performance as Omi in 'Kai Po Che' we are willing to forget the cameo that Amit Sadh did in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Phoonk 2'. Just like his co-star Rajput, Amit also began his career on television and went on a sabbatical to study the nuances of acting in New York. The hiatus did the actor a lot of good, because we got to see an evolved mature performance from the actor. Although he had just one release this year, he will soon be seen in Shoojit Sircar's next.
Varun Sharma (Actor, 'Fukrey'): The eagerness and zeal with which Varun Sharma got familiar with the college life and adapted the character of a school dropout was commendable. His infectious smile and that spark makes us believe that he is not yet done making people laugh. There's more to come
Dhanush(Actor, 'Raanjhanaa'): The National Award winning actor is already a super star in South India. Many raised doubts about Anand L Rai's decision to cast Dhanush in the lead role of a Hindi film since he doesn't have the quintessential looks of an actor but his weakness turned out to be the USP of 'Raanjhanaa' and left people gaping at this 'skinny ' man with the most charming smile. A bit selective about the films he chooses, Dhanush will be seen in R Balki's next with Amitabh Bachchan and Akshara Haasan. Needless to say, he will pass with flying colours, this time around as well.
Neeraj Kabi(Actor, 'Ship Of Theseus'): Being patient pays and actor Neeraj Kabi can vouch for it. The actor made his debut in 1997 in an NFDC film and almost became disillusioned with Bollywood till Anand Gandhi came knocking at his door with role of a Jain monk in the sublime 'Ship Of Theseus'. The wait to prove himself as an actor showed on screen as Kabi delivered an unforgettable performance in the film. A known face in the theatre circuit , Kabi is currently working with Shyam Benegal in the director's TV series 'Samvidhan'. Let's hope he doesn't have to wait another 10 years to showcase his talent.
Vikrant Massey(Actor, 'Lootera'): Another popular TV face, Vikrant Massey, unlike his peers who aspire to do the lead role in films, chose to debut in a supporting role in Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Lootera'. The film a love story, had Massey playing a con man along with Ranveer Singh. While the story focused on Ranveer and Sonakshi's romantic track, Vikrant managed to make an impact with his charming act.
Shadab Kamil(Actor, 'BA Pass'): Dark, edgy and almost depressing- Ajay Bahl's 'BA Pass' talked about a part of Delhi that is hardly discussed. Theatre actor Shadad Kamil played the lead role of a male prostitute and managed to make a remarkable impact even though he was pitted against strong actors like Shilpa Shukla, Rajesh Sharma and Deepti Naval.
Nimrat Kaur(Actress, 'The Lunchbox'): Nimrat Kaur, a very popular face thanks to the ad commercials she has featured in, was called the modern day Charulata at the Cannes film festival this year when she went to present her film 'The Lunchbox' and why not! The actress completely stole our hearts with her restraint performance as the middle class housewife yearning for companionship and happiness in the film.
Ritesh Batra( Director, 'The Lunchbox'): To tell a simple story in a simple and engaging way is an art. And documentary filmmaker Ritesh Batra clearly mastered that art with 'The Lunchbox'. It may have not been selected by the jury to represent India at the Oscars this year, but it managed to make an impact amongst the cine goers.
Mrighdeep Singh Lamba(Director, 'Fukrey'): Debutant director Mrighdeep Singh Lamba brought alive a lower middle class locality of West Delhi on screen in 'Fukrey'. Even though the film did not feature any major star, it managed to strike a chord with the audience. Simplistic approach and a hilarious story made 'Fukrey' a surprise hit this year.
Ashima Chibber(Director, 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti'): She captured the the chaos and madness of a big fat Indian wedding to its perfection. A story about a missing car and a boisterous Punjabi family was hilarious and struck a chord with the viewers.
Bhumi Trivedi(Singer, 'Ram Chahe Leela' from 'Ram Leela'): Former Indian Idol contestants, Bhumi Trivedi surprised one and all with her sultry, husky voice in 'Ram Chahe Leela'. Not having the most conventional voice that one hears in Bollywood, Bhumi managed to make the song a hit amongst the youth.
Siddharth and Garima(writers for 'Ram leela'): They gave the popular Shakespearean tale of 'Romeo and Juliet' a rustic Gujarati twist. Lauded for the dialogues, the writer duo also co wrote the screenplay with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Ankit Tiwari(Singer, 'Sun raha hai na' from 'Ashiqui 2'): The voice behind the country's new love anthem is a Kanpur boy who grew up on Bollywood music. The singer composed music for 'Do Dooni Chaar' and 'Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster' but shot to fame with Pritam's song. The singer will soon be working with 'Ashiqui 2' director Mohit Suri for his next film.
