KOLLAM: A three-and-a-half-year-old boy, Anshad, who was shut inside a room by his step-father and tortured continuously for four days, was rescued by neighbours and handed over to the Kottiyam Police on Sunday. The boy, with severe lash marks and open wounds all over his body, has been admitted to the Holy Cross Hospital in Kottiyam. The step-father is absconding. The boy is said to have been mercilessly beaten using a leather belt and thrashed with rough scratchy-edge wood used for cooking. Belt marks, which were blistering, were found on his back. There were also deep scratches and open bleeding wounds. The boy’s plight was noticed by neighbours only when the he managed to come out of the house after the step-father, Shaji, an auto driver, left for his daily rounds. They promptly informed the police. Shaji locked up the mother and son inside the house when he went out.Shaji had also been beating his wife, the boy’s mother. Anshad is Sabeena’s child from her first marriage. Though the boy and his mother insisted that he was beaten up for failing to properly write the first Malayalam alphabet, the police find the explanation hard to believe. Sources said there were serious problems between the husband and wife and that there were frequent fights. ‘’The boy always ended up being badly beaten during all such fights between the husband and wife,’’ a police source said. The couple had even lived apart for some time, the source added. As of now, they live in a rented house at Mylapore near Umayanalloor.
