Campaign against use of tobacco by sportspersons

Tobacco Free Kerala, a body working to create awareness on the ill- effects of tobacco use, has came out to spread the message that use of tobacco by sportspersons can bring havoc to their career.

The office-bearers of the body said that though it take years of dedicated hard work, regimented training and strict adherence to diet to peak success, indulging in vices such as smoking and other intoxicants can curtail the career of the sportsmen.

U Vimal Kumar, co-founder, director and chief coach of Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, said that smoking and use of other tobacco products can adversely affect stamina which is vital for the  sportspersons.

‘’The lifestyle of parents and their mentors have a direct impact on children. It is important that parents keep away from smoking and use of other forms of tobacco if they have sporting aspirations for their child,’’he said.

Dr George Mathews, medical officer of Sports Authority of India (SAI), said that one of the most important factors determining the stamina of the athlete is the ability of the lungs to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere.

‘’In the case of smokers, this is impaired and they find themselves out of breath quicker than non-smokers,’’ Dr George Mathews added.
