The Chhattisgarh High Court has suspended the then additional district and sessions judge (fast track court), Jagdalpur, Anestus Toppo in connection with the suicide of a senior police official in Bastar district last month.
"Considering the inquiry report by the Registrar (Vigilance), the High Court, with regard to the work and conduct of Anestus Toppo, the then ADJ (FTC), Jagdalpur, it was resolved to initiate departmental inquiry against him," an HC official said on Saturday.
"Besides, it was resolved to place him (Toppo) under suspension in contemplation of the departmental inquiry with headquarter at Bilaspur," he added. Toppo is presently posted as Chairman of permanent Lok Adalat, Bilaspur. Jagdalpur (City) SP Devnarayan Patel, who was suspended following a tussle with ADJ Toppo last month, committed suicide after shooting his wife and two children at his official residence in Jagdalpur on the intervening night of February 24-25. While the couple died on the spot, their children - Aryan (6) and Poonam (11) were admitted at Ramkrishna Care Hospital in Raipur, where they are recuperating.
The state government ordered a magisterial probe soon after the incident. As per a suicide note recovered from Patel's residence, he was frustrated over his suspension. "I was always committed for my state and department and based on false claims made by a drunkard against me, I have been dishonoured and suspended without proper probe into the case," police sources said quoting the note, purportedly written by Patel.
They said Patel had referred Toppo as a drunkard in the note. Later, HC had ordered an inquiry into the work and conduct of Toppo and shifted him to Bilaspur as the Chairman of Permanent Lok Adalat. The incident dates back to February 23 when Toppo, who was allegedly drunk, entered into a heated argument with Patel, who was reportedly trying to restore order, in a full public view on a Jagdalpur street.
