Chief Minister Oommen Chanday said that Volkswagen India has given an Expression of Interest (EoI) for starting an engine assembly unit in the state with an outlay of `2,000 crore, though he admitted that the company had not finalised its plans concretely.
“Top officials of the Volkswagen company had met me ahead of Emerging Kerala summit itself. They met again while the event was going on.
The registration for participation by the German car manufacturing major was made in the name of proposed venture itself. “They are keen on the project,’’ said Chandy, attesting to an ‘Express’ report in this regard.
“The confusion has arisen because the project was listed as one among those finalised in the list of projects presented after the event,’’ he said.
“What Volkswagen has so far given is the Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the project,’’ he said.
The Chief Minister further added that the company had received offers from other states as well to provide facilities to set up the unit.
