Colonel Hill Pillar: A Monument Of Historical Significance In Uttara Kannada District
In India, he led the Mysore Division of the Madras Army under the Marquess of Tweeddale starting on November 24, 1841.

Monuments often carry significant historical narratives, serving as repositories of important stories. Recently, one such monument has been drawing attention. Situated in the Uttara Kannada district, this landmark was erected by East India Company in honour of their Colonel who lost his life in battle against the ruler of Gerusoppa.

A 30-metre-tall column was set up by the 14th Madras Native Infantry on behalf of the East India Company to honour Colonel Hill. Colonel Hill was in charge of the Mysuru division during a war with Queen Chennabhaira Devi.

In 1854, local records unveiled the burial site of Colonel Clement Hill, a former Major stationed in Gerusoppe. Colonel Clement Hill, aged 63, died at the Jog Falls of Guersoppa in Karnataka while serving in combat for the Mysore Division. He was buried in Honavar on January 22. His loyal canine companion also died in the same battle. They are both buried under this pillar.

This pillar is 170 years old. It stands facing all four directions. The hill is known as Colonel Kamba because of the sediment from this pillar. It’s also a cherished spot for dog lovers.

A big column called the Colonel Hill Pillar stands in Honavar in memory of Colonel Hill. It is 30 meters tall. People in the area are working hard to keep the column and his grave safe.

Clement Delves Hill, British army officer Major-General born on December 6, 1781, played a significant role in history. He fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and served in India afterwards. In India, he led the Mysore Division of the Madras Army under the Marquess of Tweeddale starting from November 24, 1841.

Clement Delves Hill was the sixth son of Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet and Mary. His mother, Mary, was the co-heir and daughter of John Chambré of Petton, Shropshire.
