New Delhi: An inquiry has been ordered into the dumping of "expensive condoms", meant for public distribution under Family Planning and HIV/AIDS control programmes at Koodalputhur Nagar in Madurai.

The condoms were to be distributed through the Primary Health centres and Government Hospitals, Deputy Director of Health Department Family Welfare R Vijaya told PTI.

Some of the fresh condoms were of deluxe varieties, which the department did not generally distribute. But, under the HIV/AIDS control programme such condoms were to be distributed.

The NGOs working for HIV/AIDS control programme could have dumped them in the garbage yard, officials said. Thousands of condoms, with expiry dates between 2008 and 2010, were found dumped in the yard.

Koodalputhur Nagar, coming under Anaiyur Municipality, had a Sri Lankan Refugee camp and a large number of NGOs were engaged in sex education and AIDS control programme.

A Preliminary examination of the condoms was over and "Apparently some NGOs had dumped them in the yard", another official said.

Investigation was on with the Tamilnadu state AIDS control Society on whether they received the particular batch of condoms. The TANSACS was zeroing in on the NGO who had received the condoms and would soon take action against them.

Each NGO was given 500 packets of condoms. “We will definitely find the culprit,” a top official said.
