All those issued notice have been asked to reply by January 4.

Mumbai: Maharashtra government on Friday decided to take action against eight policemen including five Indian Police Service officers for misplacing a crucial file containing details of slain Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare's bulletproof jacket.

Maharashtra Home Department issued notices to the eight policemen asking them to file replies by January 4.

The file had gone missing after allegations that the bulletproof jacket was of poor quality.

The file was found a few days later, but reportedly with a few pages missing.

CNN-IBN was the first to report that the file related to bulletproof jacket had gone missing, soon after Karkare's death in the shootout with terrorists.

His widow, Kavita Karkare, has been alleging foul play behind the incident.

In December 2009 Mumbai Police had claimed that the bulletproof jacket was thrown away by a sweeper at the JJ Hospital.

But the sweeper himself had later denied the claim.

Karkare was shot dead by terrorists on the night of November 26, 2008, during the terror attacks near Cama Hospital in Mumbai.
