Lucknow: In a novel gesture, U P Police has sanctioned moustaches allowance to two of its constables.
Mangal Prasad Pal and Ram Khelawan, the two constables from 35th Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalion in Lucknow, have been awarded allowance of Rs 50 per month for maintenance and upkeep of their moustaches.
Pal, known for his 'police cut' broad moustaches was spotted by the authorities recently and was allowed moustaches allowance along with Khelawan.
Company Commander of PAC Sudhir Sharma under whom these constables work said that the presence of unique style of moustaches of the two constables went well with the valour and bravery of PAC in the country.
The third person who is to get moustaches allowance is another jawan from the same company, Sheshnath Singh, a resident of Azamgarh.
These jawans are happy with the recognition and vow to maintain high norms of bravery befitting with their moustaches.
The move is sure to follow suit in other parts of the country, especially the 'land of palaces' Rajasthan, where the twirled moustaches have been part of the male pride and royalty personified.
It is not for the first time that the 35th battallion had earned such a distinction.
Suraj Singh, a company commander who retired in 1989, used to get moustaches allowance by the ruling Britishers.
In 1976 another jawan Jagannath Tiwari was given an allowance of Rs five per month by the Britishers and later Balbir Singh Bedi, the then SSP of Lucknow, gave him a Rs 15 per month as moustaches allowance.
In olden days, moustaches were manifestation of feudal social dynamics and the different of society were represented through their style of moustaches they used to keep.
Upward pointed mustaches were kept by the royals while the middle rung used to maintain a parallel growth, the lower classes were only allowed moustaches pointed towards the ground.
