KOCHI: Tense situation prevailed on the premises of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) at Kalamassery in the wee hours of Friday, following a clash between the students of Cusat and locals.Police have registered cases against 50 persons in connection with the clash that erupted near the Cusat campus. Kalamassery police said the incident occurred when a group of students from Cusat allegedly ransacked a hotel situated near the university campus around 12.30 am. Following it, a group of locals chased the students and beat them up. On information heavy police force reached the spot and conducted a lathicharge to disperse the agitating mob. Several shop owners and students were injured in the clash. Locals alleged that the students vandalised the hotel for no reason. Tense situation continued in the area till 2.30 am. It has been alleged that SFI leaders in the university were behind the attack. The injured students and locals have been admitted to Kalamassery Cooperative Medical College. According to police, the fight erupted after the students picked up a quarrel with the staff of the hotel. The students, who returned with wooden logs and hockey sticks, vandalised the hotel. In protest against the incident, the shop owners at Kalamassery downed their shutters and observed a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the area. Police said a separate case would be registered against those locals who attacked a car in which the students of Cusat were travelling. The locals vandalised the car and smashed its window.
