ROURKELA: Uncertainty over the fate of the defunct refractory plant of Orissa Industries Ltd (Orind), which was renamed as Shaswat International Ltd, continues with the management refusing to resume operation. Agitating employees, on the other hand, are insisting on continuation of service and production. Recently, the State Labour Department rejected the appeal for closure of the plant.   Sources said amid mounting criticism, the government has adopted a tough stand against the continuing erratic behaviour of the management led by chairman Ravin Jhunjhunwala. This saw arrest of three officials a couple of days back.  Employees had lodged complaints alleging misappropriation of Provident Fund money and other funds to which they  were statutorily entitled.  Rourkela SP Himanshu Lal also hinted at the possible arrest of Jhunjhunwala who is allegedly hiding. Meanwhile, the agitation of the employees, under the banner of the Lathikata Mazdoor Munch, who have not received their salaries for 11 months continues in front of the labour office  here.   Orind’s executive director (in-charge) Pitabas Mishra told mediapersons on Tuesday that with Rs. 100-crore liability, the company is in no position to resume operation and talks are on with Bhusan Steel for take over.Orissa unit working president of AITUC Pravat Mishra said all the trade unions would ensure that the employees don’t lose jobs and get their dues in the event of the company’s merger or acquisition.
