New Delhi: Adding a new product category to its private brand Digiflip, Flipkart announced the launch of its first tablet - Digiflip Pro XT 712. Though there is a plethora of budget tablets from a growing bunch of home-grown manufacturers, the one from Flipkart is believed to be the first tablet from any Indian e-commerce company.
We got to spend a brief time with the online retailer's maiden tablet PC that looks more or less like other contenders in the market. Its design does not even have a single distinctive feature that can make it stand out in a crowd. But ergonomically, the tablet is decently built. It does not feel heavy in hands and is comfortable to hold and carry along.
Though it has simple looks, the Digiflip Pro logo at the centre of back does not appear pleasing to the eye.
The back panel is not removable, there is, however, a thin strip of plastic stretching across the top that you can take off. Underneath the removable thin strip is a microSD card slot that supports a card of up to 32GB for additional storage and two SIM card slots. The Digiflip Pro XT 712 is a 3G tablet with voice calling facility.
Its 5 megapixel rear camera comes with a flash. I could test its camera in soft-light conditions and results turned out to be good. While Flipkart at the event bragged about its 2 megapixel front camera by calling it an apt camera for selfies, but having taken my own selfies at the demo zone, I have a different opinion. The front camera is not good for taking selfie shots, but it is apt for video calling.
Its 7-inch display produces good colours and offers great viewing angles. The touchscreen is quite responsive, and therefore, it was smooth to navigate.
The phone runs stock Android and does not come with bloatware apps that often eat up your storage space, and eventually, hamper the performance of the device. But it does comes pre-installed with a few Flipkart apps, and as I suspected, those apps couldn't be uninstalled. I could only undo updates to those apps, but couldn't completely uninstall them.
The speakers on the tablet fail to impress both in terms of sound quality and loudness. However, with earphones (that comes with the tablet) plugged in, the results were impressive.
The tablet has 16GB of internal storage, of which approximately 13GB is user-accessible. Under the hood is a quad-core processor along with 1GB of RAM.
Flipkart seems to be pushing its new tablet with the help of initial offers and other lucrative deals including free eBooks worth Rs 2000 and shopping benefits worth Rs 5,000 on purchase of the tablet.
Also, the company is offering a 50 per cent discount on its cover that comes separately for Rs 749. While the deals may tempt you, but a buying decision should not be taken at the cost of your primary product itself.
It is too early to say whether the Rs 9,999 Digiflip Pro tablet makes to our recommendation list or not. Wait for a little longer for our final verdict on the Flipkart Digiflip Pro XT 712.
