MKs plan may strengthen Stalins hand in party

DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Saturday said the party plans to accord 30 per cent reservation to youth in the elections to come.

Speaking at ‘Mupperum Vizha’ here, Karunanidhi said that he came up with this idea after witnessing the rising strength of the youth wing of the party.

“It is not necessary that only those elders who had been fielded earlier should contest in the upcoming elections. We may give opportunity to the youth by allocating at least 30 per cent seats to them. Women contestants may get 5-10 per cent seats. I will discuss this with party general secretary K Anbazhagan and will come out with a detailed plan for the upcoming elections,” Karunanidhi said.

Political commentators deem this as the move to give an upper hand to DMK treasurer and Karunanidhi’s younger son M K Stalin since the party youth wing is being led by him.

Meanwhile, the DMK chief suggested the State should hold talks with anti-Koodankulam nuclear plant protesters.

Apparently referring to his political rivals, Karunanidhi wondered as whether those who made remarks about his “dignity” could debate the same on a same dais with him.

Even as Karunanidhi spent majority of the time of the speech to explain his ‘dignity’, other speakers, including Stalin and party MP K Kanimozhi, followed suit.
