New Delhi: The fight between renowned cardiologist Naresh Trehan and Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday took a new turn when an association of doctors - who are supporting Trehan - moved the Delhi High Court for setting up a committee to run Escorts hospital.
An application in this regard was mentioned before Justice Gita Mittal, but she fixed the matter for hearing on Thursday.
The court had, on May 19, permitted Trehan to treat patients and have unrestricted entry into the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre run by Fortis Healthcare.
A group of 10 - 12 doctors from Escorts have also filed a petition in the High Court saying that he should be allowed to continue as Executive Director of the hospital.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trehan had landed himself in a legal soup when a case of trespassing and vandalism was registered against him at the behest of Escorts management.
Trehan and his close associates were not allowed to enter the healthcare institute on Saturday. However after a prolonged scuffle because agitated relatives of patients protested the delay in operations, Trehan was permitted to enter the premises with police aid.
Saturday’s court order which allowed “full and free access to his office, staff, and technical and administrative facilities” in the Escorts Heart Institute has also become a subject of controversy.
While Fortis says it is adhering to the court’s order by allowing entry of all doctors and technicians required for surgery, Dr Trehan’s camp maintains that the court order does not permit the entry of his personal staff, without which it is said, he can not work.
"He (Trehan) fully understands the implications of all this," Daljeet Singh, President Operations of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
Singh claimed the Escorts management was complying with the Delhi High Court order which "does not mention anything about his (Trehan's) associates."
"They do not have any technical skills and only take care of secretarial work," he was further quoted as saying.
Fortis Healthcare on Friday had sacked Trehan as Executive Director of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre for he they claimed was pursuing his pet Medicity project in Gurgaon.
The standoff took a turn for the worse as Fortis Healthcare Limited Managing Director Shivinder Mohan Singh accused Trehan of siphoning off funds from Escorts for his Medicity project.
Trehan denied the charges and hit back at Singh saying that he had "drained the coffers of Escorts" by spending "a fortune" on building an office for himself within the hospital premises.
However, Trehan continues to hold 10 per cent stake in Escorts.
