CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has appealed that no one indulge in the sort of violence that killed three and injured many in Paramakudi and Madurai. Expressing her condolences to the familes of the three men killed in police firing in Paramakudi, she strongly condemned such violence carried out by some to further their political aims.Jayalalithaa also announced a solatium of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of those killed in the firing. She recounted the events leading up to the violence which, in turn, led to police opening fire on demonstrators protesting the preventive arrest of Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam founder John Pandian. With an eye on the law and order situation ahead of the death anniversary of Immanuel Sekaran, police had banned Pandian’s entry into Paramakudi, which houses the tomb of the slain leader. They then arrested Pandian at Vallanadu, as he made his way towards Paramkudi. On hearing the news of Pandian’s arrest, his supporters blocked road in Paramakudi, ignoring the advice of police to disperse. “Not only did they ignore police advice, they started pelting stones and petrol bombs at the policemen. When police fired tear gas shells, they torched a riot control vehicle and a fire truck that were nearby,” said Jayalalithaa in a statement to the media.“To restore law and order and protect public property police opened fire. Unfortunately, three were killed. Ramanthapuram DIG Sandeep Mittal, DSP Ganesan and Inspector Adhisayaraj and many other police personnel sustained injuries,” the CM added. She also said that a similar protest in Madurai had led to firing in which two had sustained injuries. An Inspector had opened fire in self-defence when he was attacked by the mob.“Such violence, carried out by some for political reasons, is highly condemnable. I appeal that no one indulge in this sort of violence. My condolences to the families of the three who have lost their lives,” said Jayalalithaa.
