An internet user, who posted the video on social media and tagged the Andhra Pradesh police, said: “Assault on ER intern at SVIMS Tirupati. Just look at the audacity of the man trying to grab the female doctor in front of everyone. This is exactly why doctors are demanding Central protection act!”
Amid the widespread outrage against the alleged rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, agitating doctors have demanded a central law seeking protection against such incidents.
The incident at SVIMS Tirupati was captured on CCTV cameras. In the video, the man can be seen grabbing the woman doctor by her hair and banging her head on the steel frame of a hospital bed. Other doctors immediately come to her rescue and overpower the man, preventing him from further attacking her.
According to a report published by NDTV, the intern has written to the SVIMS director-cum-vice chancellor Dr RV Kumar and said a patient attacked her inside the emergency medicine department. She identified the patient as Bangaru Raju, saying there were no security personnel around to help her and demanding measures to ensure safety at the workplace.
“…I was unexpectedly attacked by a patient, Bangaru Raju, who approached me from behind, pulled my hair and began forcibly banging my head against the steel rod of a cot,” the report quoted her letter.
She added: “If patient had been armed with a sharp weapon, the situation could have escalated with severe consequences.”
The report said doctors at the hospital staged a protest after the incident, raising concerns over their safety and demanding measures to ensure they are not harmed as they go about their work.
