Kochiites will soon have one more excuse to visit the city’s most popular hangout - the Marine Drive. After 15 years of wait, the Greater Cochin Development Authority has now decided to have a food court overlooking the magnificent backwaters atop its GCDA complex in Marine Drive.
“The space has been lying vacant for 15 years. So we have decided to rent it out for a roof-top food court overlooking the backwaters. Apart from Indian, Chinese and Arabian cuisines, the food court will also have a children’s play area. We hope the project will be a fillip to the tourism potential of Kochi, said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.
Apart from the food court, one of the key attractions is that the GCDA hopes to make this a point to aboard its proposed cable car that is planned overhead the Marine Drive Walkway to the Goshree Bridge.
The area is now connected by a lift. After renting out the property, the parties will be provided space at a concessional rate for six months to set up basic facilities. An additional capsule lift and an automatic covering system will have to be installed at the space during the period. The tender for the project will be issued by October 10, the GCDA chairman said.
After being unused for all these years, the GCDA now hopes to make a remuneration at the rate of Rs 15 a square feet in the area of around 11,000 sqft once the food court gets operational, said sources from the GCDA.
Other tourist attractions like the laser light-cum-water fountain show, extension of the Marine Drive Walkway till the Goshree Bridge incorporating new sea view bridges and towers and so on are some of the GCDA projects on the anvil.
