CHENNAI: From as early as 4 am, Sacred Heart Shrine in Egmore was filled with pilgrims. There were no decorations adorning the altar. Inaugurated by Rev A M Chinnappa, Archbishop of Chennai (Mylapore) Rector Joseph Manickam, Parish Priest, Egmore, Scared Heart Shine said, “Pilgrims travel to this church on all Fridays every month to get the blessings from the five wounds of Jesus Christ. On Good Friday more than 1 lakh pilgrims came to the church. There were three ways of the cross today in Tamil, English and Malayalam. And this adoration went on till midnight”.A Hot Cross Bun Ceremony also took place on Good Friday at all churches. People who fasted ate the fresh Hot Cross Buns and ended their fast, provided at the churches. It is a tradition to eat warm ‘Hot cross buns’ on this day.Earlier in the morning at 7 am the people of St Theresa’s Church, Sembiam went on a procession holding the holy cross and prayed for world peace. People from all religions participated in this procession.
