Fashion designer Deepika Gehani is showing her festive collection titled Patch of Paradise at the Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai on October 20, Monday. We got a sneak preview at her store in Mumbai, where the designer tipped us off on how to get trendy this Diwali.
The Mantra: Spend less, but look like a million bucks!
MORE PRINT, LESS ACCESSORY
"Make sure you buy fabrics that look vibrant and stunning in terms of colour and style, so that you need minimal accessories to go along with it," she adds.
Deepika's Diwali style tip: The colours and prints of this off-shoulder yellow dress are vibrant enough to be worn sans gaudy jewellery. Accessorise with a pair of bling slip-ons, like the ones worn by Simran. This gives the overall look a balance and you don't end up looking OTT (over the top)! This look is perfect for a festive night out with friends.

Gold, diamonds or none?
Gold is getting expensive. If you cannot afford a new jewellery set this Diwali, there's a smart alternative.
Deepika's Diwali style tip: Take your favourite pendant and instead of stringing it to a bland chain, team with a string of colourful beads to match your outfit. You could also go for rudraksha, coral or rubies, which can have a stunning effect. "A pendant can also be used as a broach like Zeba has done," she says.

MIX 'N' MATCH
With some smart changes in your wardrobe, you can get a whole "new" range of clothes to wear.
Deepika's Diwali style tip: The key is to mix and match. If you wore a nice sari a couple to years back, wear it again but revamp into a sexy new blouse, this time round (strappy ones are all the rage). Ask your tailor (you need a good one) to style it up with white stones for that extra shimmer and shine.
You can do the same with a kurta. For instance, this bright short kurta looks perfect when teamed with a pair of jeans and platforms with a little bit of bling.
Accessorise with a choker and your favourite pendant.
