Kolkata: The final hearing in the Rizwanur Rehman death case that was expected in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, has been adjourned.

The apex court had earlier stayed the Calcutta High Court order for a fresh probe by the CBI. Ashok Todi, Rizwanur's father-in-law, and the other accused are also expected to file fresh bail petitions in a trial court in Kolkata on the same day.

The Supreme Court has stayed two orders relating to the Rizwanur Rahman case – first, the order by a trial court that discharged Ashok Todi. And second, the order by the Calcutta High Court, which directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to re-investigate the case.

The Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to ascertain the cause of Rahman’s death. The CBI in its turn had dismissed Rahman’s death as suicide and also went a step further to chargesheet seven others accusing them of ‘abetment to suicide’.

A division bench of the Calcutta High Court had recently quashed the findings and directed the CBI to lodge a fresh case of murder against the seven accused.

Rizwanur Rahman was found dead near railway tracks in North Kolkata’s Dumdum area on September 21, 2007. His suspicious death occurred after a month of his marrying Ashok Todi’s daughter Priyanka against his wishes.
