J&K Environment Committee calls for efforts by various agencies to save environment and natural resources.

Srinagar: Expressing concern over the overall environmental degradation, Environment Committee of Jammu and Kashmir legislators has called for coordinated efforts by various agencies to save the environment and natural resources of the state to maintain the ecological balance.

"Environment is connected with every human being and creature and it becomes the duty of every individual to contribute their might to save it from further degradation," the committee said.

The committee, chaired by Mr Mubarak Gul, opposition National Conference MLA, met on Thursday and discussed various issues pertaining to the conservation of environment, pollution control and afforestation.

Members of the committee emphasised the need for coordinated efforts by various government agencies, NGOs, educational institutions and common man to pledge for this cause.

The concerned departments such as forests, pollution control board, environment and Lakes and Water Development Authority (LAWDA) should formulate a common strategy to tackle with this menace.

The Committee also welcomed the ban imposed on polythene bags by the High Court in Srinagar city and at tourist places.

"This is a historic decision and agencies concerned should ensure its implementation in letter and spirit," it added.

It also stressed the need to give special attention to save the world famous Dal Lake from being polluted and directed the LAWDA authorities to take necessary steps in this regard.
