Four passengers, including a woman, travelling in a private bus were killed and 67 injured in a mishap on Sunday, at the Sevoor bypass junction, near Arni.
The bus turned turtle after a cement-laden lorry rammed into the rear of the bus. Police arrested lorry driver D Kannan (27) of Agaram village near Polur, and registered a case against him under various sections of 279, 337, 338, 304 (A) of IPC.
The mishap took place at Sevoor junction in Arni Taluk Police Station limit at about 8.30 am. One person was killed on spot and at least 67 were injured.They were shifted to Government Hospital in Arni and the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. Three persons succumbed to injuries in hospital, taking the toll to four.
While two of the deceased were identified as Ramesh (42) of Saidapet in Arni and Kuppan (50) of Kamandalanaganathi Street in Arni, the police are yet to identity the other two killed.
Police sources said the lorry rammed into the bus at the crisscrossing junction. The bus was thrown from the road and fell upside-down on the edge of the road,” said sub-inspector of police of Arni Taluk station K Kasi. He added around 15 passengers were critically injured.
The bus, which belonged to Sri Krishna Bus Service, was overloaded with 115 passengers, as against the permitted number of 55, he said, adding, “It took nearly an hour to shift them to hospitals. We have laid speed breakers on four roads at the junction to avoid accidents.”
Health Minister Dr V S Vijay visited the accident victims in VGMC Hospital at Adugamparai, Vellore, on Sunday afternoon.
