CHENNAI: The State government on Friday said that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has directed officials to complete the distribution of free dhotis and sarees between Pongal and the Tamil New Year s.The delay in the distribution was caused by the model code of conduct for the April Assembly elections and the local body elections in October last year. There was a delay in calling for tenders to procure yarn. She has directed that the production be monitored closely.With a view of providing employment to weavers of handlooms and powerlooms, the CM ordered that the entire requirement for free distribution (170.84 lakh sarees and 169.75 dhotis) should be procured only from Tamil Nadu. So far, `350 crore has been earmarked for this scheme for the current financial year. The CM has also hiked the weaving charges considering the long-pending demand of the weavers.
