HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has sought the cooperation of all political parties and public representatives to remove encroachments and widen the storm water drains (nalas) in the larger interest of the city. The appeal was made at a joint review meeting mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and commissioner MT Krishna Babu held with the deputy mayor, floor leaders, representatives of political parties and senior officials of the engineering and town planning wings on Saturday. As the city has been facing frequent flooding during the rainy season with the width of nalas shrinking year by year due to encroachments on both the sides. Removal of encroachments to widen the nalas has come a cropper due to stiff resistance from the encroachers in whose support political parties and leaders rally whenever an action is contemplated. The corporation has taken up widening of the nalas as per the recommendations of the Kirloskar and Void Solutions consultancies. It has worked out a compensation and rehabilitation package for the encroachers to be displaced. As the monsoon season was over and works needed to be completed well before the onset of the next monsoon, funds were sanctioned by the Union government under JNNURM as a priority, the commissioner explained. The mayor wanted removal of encroachments and widening of the drains in a timebound manner.
