New Delhi: The order of the Madras High Court which has made it mandatory for all two-wheeler riders, including pillion riders to wear helmets in six cities of Tamil Nadu will come into effect from Friday.
The order will be applicable to the state’s six municipal corporations – Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Salem and Tirunelveli – as for now.
The order would become compulsory throughout the state from June 30.
Meanwhile, police said the stringent law does not even spare children.
They added that the seat belt rule for front seat car passengers would also come into effect from Friday.
Official sources informed news agency PTI that since the death of two wheeler riders in accidents were increasing at an alarming rate, the state decided to take these measures.
The government has also asked people to use helmets with the ISI mark and has warned of severe action against those selling helmets without the ISI mark.
This is the second time helmet wearing is being made compulsory. The government had on March 8, 1985 made compulsory following a report from a group of neurosurgeons who said that riding two-wheelers without helmet would damage the nerves and prove fatal in case of accidents. But that order was withdrawn on June 26, 1989, following representations from two-wheeler riders.
