Usually when there is a problem with leaking or blocked drain, the civic agencies take their own sweet time to attend to the problem. But that does not seem to be the case with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board workers. Recently a drain in Cambridge layout’s Main Road was blocked. Due to the block, the water was overflowing on the road. Overnight the road was flooded with the dirty and smelling water. “This happened the night before. During the day the road was dry and when I came in the morning the water on the road was at least a few inches deep. It was dirty and had a foul odour,” said a vegetable vendor on the main road. Merwyn Coutinho, a resident of Cambridge Layout said, “The massive puddle on the road was a rude shock in the morning. I was heading towards Frank Anthony School from Command Hospital on my bike. I literally went right into it.”He further added, “However, within an hour  or so later I saw the BWSSB men working on the problem. They got to work and began clearing the filth that had blocked the drain. It was a relief to see a civic agency respond to a problem with such promptness.” The BWSSB worker told City Express that the cause for the block was household waste and non-degradable materials thrown into the drain. Plastics products are the reason behind the block and the eventual overflow. Speaking about the situation, Shashi Kiran, assistant engineer east division said, “We did not receive any complaints about the overflow. Our BWSSB workers spotted the problem themselves and informed me about it. As soon as they had told us about it, they immediately got to work and cleared the block.”Sanketh Nayak, another resident said, “I was fascinated to see such quick action from a civic agency. Usually they take their own time to attend to a problem. But this issue was handled very well. This particular road has two schools that are less than a kilometre apart. There is a lot of traffic here. Had the problem not been solved in time, a lot of people would have suffered.”
