While Lok Sabha elections were all about economics, foreign policies and women security, these issues have taken a backseat in the Assembly elections, at least in Haryana. People are looking at candidates who promise to solve basic issues of electricity, water, cleanliness, sewage and roads.

In Karnal, Ambala and Faridabad, the candidates of the two national parties Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have focussed on these issues during their campaign. Riding high on the Narendra Modi wave, the BJP has added the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign to its agenda.

Karnal voters say they want their candidate to give them better basic and civic amenities. They also want their MLA to be someone they personally know and can meet. Even as BJP is keeping Modi at the forefront, the party has been harping that local leaders will also be available for people.

The Congress on other hand has avoided the presence of big leaders like party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul. Instead the party has kept its local leaders at the forefront in the Assembly elections.

However in Ambala Cantt, people have expressed doubts about the presence of their local MLA after elections are over.

Mukesh Sharma of Shyam Nagar in Ambala Cantt said, "There is no sewage yet in our area and the roads are in bad shape. While both Nirmal Singh of Congress and Anil Viz of BJP have visited local areas in the past few days, these leaders are not around once elections are over. It is difficult for a common man to access them unless they go in large numbers."

Even in Faridabad, people in some areas are upset with the selection of some candidates as they have not been around to solve local issues such as power and roads.

Rewari constituency is no different as locals complained of bad roads, clogged drains, filth and dirt.

What's your reaction?
