Watching sports, especially those involving animals, can be captivating. One such example is bullock cart racing, a beloved and traditional sport in regions like Western Maharashtra, Pune, and Karnataka. One particular bull has gained significant popularity in North Karnataka, specifically in Belagavi. It consistently clinched the top spot in district-level bullock cart races, earning substantial prize money. Sandeep Patil from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, is popular for his oxen in Karnataka, having purchased this particular one from local farmers four years ago for a hefty sum.

Named Jinka after the acquisition, this bull has dominated inter-district competitions in Chikodi, Karnataka, accumulating prizes totalling Rs 17 lakh and becoming a sensation across the region. Now, there’s considerable demand for Jinka, with those aware of its 92 previous first-place wins seeking a hefty price tag of Rs 80 lakh for the bull.

However, despite multiple offers, Sandeep Patil has shown no interest in selling Jinka. He has turned down multiple offers from people wanting to buy Jinka and has maintained that he does not want to sell the bull.

Animal rights activists have strongly criticised bullock cart racing. In October of last year, they initiated an online petition opposing the traditional buffalo race known as Kambala, an annual bull race or bullock cart race held in Karnataka. The petition, titled “Kindness for Kambala Karnataka,” advocated for the humane treatment of animals participating in the race.

The petitioners urged that Kambala should only be permitted if it guarantees that the animals do not endure unnecessary pain or suffering. Additionally, the activists claimed that Section 4 (F) was frequently violated as a result of the event. The preservation and security of native buffalo breeds are highlighted in this section. There have been reports of animal mistreatment and cases involving injury to humans in the past.
