Onam, one of Kerala’s most vibrant festivals, is closely associated with the grand feast known as Sadya, where families come together to prepare and enjoy a lavish meal. The tradition of cooking together with family members in the kitchen is central to the celebration, symbolising unity and the joy of togetherness.
Onam is also a harvest festival, making agriculture a core aspect of its significance. However, in modern times, the increased use of harmful pesticides and chemical fertilisers in farming has raised health concerns. The fruits and vegetables produced using these methods can cause chronic diseases over time, leading many to seek healthier alternatives like organic produce.
To encourage organic farming and promote healthier consumption, the Kerala government, through the Department of Agriculture, has been actively advocating for organic farming methods. Despite the growing demand for organic products, the higher price tag often deters the average consumer from purchasing them. Recognising this challenge, the state government has stepped in with a solution.
Ahead of Onam, the Kerala government has set up special Onam markets across the state, particularly in the Thiruvananthapuram, to ensure the availability of organic vegetables at affordable prices. These markets are organised under the leadership of Kudumbashree and other agricultural organisations.
The markets, which have been operational since yesterday, will remain open until September 14, though the schedule may vary in some locations. These markets sell organic vegetables sourced directly from local farmers and produce cultivated by Kudumbashree members and MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) workers, ensuring high-quality, safe produce for the public.
During the Onam season, when vegetable prices in regular markets often skyrocket, the government Onam markets offer a much-needed alternative. These markets provide significant relief to families, allowing them to celebrate Onam with fresh, healthy ingredients without the financial burden. Government initiatives like these, organised through Kudumbashree and related organizations, benefit both consumers and the farming community, promoting sustainable agriculture while making organic produce more accessible to all.
