India is in the middle of a 'ring of fire': Chidambaram
Pakistan is threatening to become a failed state, says Chidambaram.

Mumbai: Voicing concern over growing political instability in Pakistan, Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram on Friday said the neighbouring country was "threatening" to become a failed state as "we don't know who is in control there".

"It (Pakistan) is not a failed state, but it is threatening to become one," Chidambaram said.

"A great concern is weighing on our our minds. In Pakistan, with regret, I would say we don't know who is in control there. Whether it is the Army or the President or the Government... We are in a difficult situation but we are a

vibrant democracy," he said at a seminar here.

Noting that a large part of Pakistan is being controlled by the Taliban, Chidambaram said the 'fire' has already spilled over to India in the form of extremist organisations like the Indian Mujahideen.

Citing unrest in other neighbouring countries like Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Chidambaram said,

India is in the middle of a "fire ring". "We are in the middle of fire ring. But we should not be singed in that big fire. We are trying to douse the fire and we don't want it to spill over, although it has already spilled over a bit in the form of home-grown terror outfits like the Indian Mujahideen," he said.

On the recent unrest in Bangladesh, Chidambaram said nearly one-sixth of the army officers in BDR have been wiped out in the recent mutiny.

While dubbing Myanmar as a "failed state" that had "ostracised itself", Chidambaram also expressed concerns over the future of the year-old Maoist Government in Nepal.

On the domestic front, Chidambaram said India's criminal procedure system has collapsed and there is a large scale backlog of court cases in various states.

"We are producing thousands of lawyers but millions of cases are pending," he said.
