Liberia has not granted political asylum to the Honorary Consul General of India.

Cairo: Liberia has said that it has not granted political asylum to the Honorary Consul General of India and the document being widely circulated in India in this regard is "forged" and "fake".

The Liberian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement saying that there is no record that the Honorary Indian Consul General Upjit Singh Sachdeva ever applied for or being granted political asylum in the West African country.

"The document being widely circulated in India purporting to be confirmation that Mr Sachdeva was granted political asylum is a fake and is forged," the Liberian Foreign Ministry said in the statement.

As proof of the forgery, the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization has issued the statement declaring the document in circulation dated 3 March 1997 as "fraudulent".

"The Government of Liberia granted an Exequatur for him after the Indian Government nominated him based on his good record and service," the statement said.

It added: "His record of service since becoming Honorary Consul of India remains impeccable and he continues significantly to the promotion of good relations between Liberia and India and the wellbeing of both Indians and Liberians in this country."

Sachdeva migrated to Liberia in 1987 and was granted Permit of Residence like thousands of other business people in the country after fulfilling all requirements for residency, the Foreign Ministry said.

He received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in the Indian capital this year for community service.
